The Story Behind the Name

Deir Ghassaneh (Dayr Ghassana)

Ramallah District

Deir Ghassaneh is situated in the Ramallah district of Palestine, approximately 26 km northwest of Ramallah at an elevation of 480 meters above sea level. The village had 625 inhabitants in 1922, increasing to 753 by 1931. By 1945, the population had grown to 880 residents, reaching 1,461 by 1961, though it subsequently declined to 859 by 1982.

Arab residents owned approximately 12,795 dunums of land, with no Jewish land ownership recorded and only 7 dunums classified as public property. The economy was predominantly agricultural, with significant olive cultivation comprising 4,450 dunums. Additional agricultural activities included irrigated plantations (8,151 dunums) and cereal crops (550 dunums).

The settlement maintains considerable historical depth, evidenced by multiple religious and cultural sites including maqams (sacred tombs) dedicated to religious figures. The village established an early educational institution with a school founded in 1912, positioning it among Palestine's pioneering educational establishments during the Ottoman period. Today, Deir Ghassaneh remains an inhabited Palestinian locality within the occupied West Bank, preserving its historical architectural heritage through restored traditional houses and documented oral histories.
